Promoting Free Folk...
The main ethos of Dulverton Folk Festival is to keep music
live and accessible for all... by keeping it free, with
camping costs as low as we can keep them, everyone who would
like to, should be able to afford to join us for a weekend and
enjoy all that is on offer. We do bucket-shaking and hold lots of raffles, and sell programmes and merchandise (well, ok, a T-shirt!) all of which helps to raise the funds that enable us to keep the festival free for now and in the future. We aim to have a lot of fun, with a combination of entertainments put on, and lots of DIY entertainment in the form of sessions in the pubs, on the lawns and anywhere that folks wish to gather and make music.
We also have a lot of support from local businesses, without whose sponsorship and advertising, again, putting on the festival for free just would not be possible.
Camping:
Please see our camping information page for full detailsHistory:
The first Dulverton Folk Festival took place in July 2007,
envisaged and organised by local musician Dave Towers.
The baton was then passed on to Sapphire Sound
for the 2008 festival.
For 2009 the festival was passed on again to several members
of a local folk band - The Rusty Buckets -
who were determined to keep the folk festival alive, and to
keep it FREE.
In 2010, with a similar organising committee to the previous
year, the festival grew yet again, and welcomed many more
musicians and dancers to our beautiful town.
For 2011 the now seasoned festival organising committee
pulled off a stonker - helped by every single person who
came along, joined in, performed, danced, or just observed!
It was improved further by the volunteers who helped with
the various stewarding tasks that helped the festival to run
smoothly
2012. We have a LOT to live up to, and to exceed! Not only
that but we have an extra day to fill with excitement fun
and frolics. We have also been joined by two fantastic new
committee members whose assistance is already proving to be
brilliant!
Thanks...
The festival couldn't happen without the support of many people and some deserve to be named and shamed... oops, I mean thanked publicly...
Our current logo has come about with some collaborative
efforts... Vikki Nuttall
took the photo in 2009, from which local watercolour artist
Sally J Maynard penned a line drawing, of Dulverton's famous
town hall steps. Bex then digitised this image and used it
to form the basis of our festival logo.
Vikki also took the photo of the stag, and of the bagpipes
that Alec Smith made, which Bex then also digitised to
create our T-shirt design, which has now formed the basis
for our current logo!
So, the thanks here has to go to Sally for providing the
drawing that has enabled us to not only have a cool logo
(yes, I am biased!) but an even cooler T-shirt (still
biased!) !
Photography for all of the Dulverton Folk Festivals has
been provided by Vikki Nuttall
who is not only a great photographer, but a fantastic
singer/songwriter too. Without her hard graft (behind the
scenes as well as the snapping she does) we wouldn't have
such a wonderful selection of photos to add to our galleries
each year, or any other pages on the website.
Our merry band of volunteers who helped our 2011 festival
run so well - we are hoping that they enjoyed themselves so
much that they will come and help us again for 2012 - Their
help ensured that the committee was still standing by the
survivors session!
Special thanks has to be offered to our (also volunteer)
breakfast chef, Sally Maynard, who worked wonders with her
hearty breakfasts - arriving in the Town Hall each morning
at 6am in order to be prepared for the rush of hungry
musicians from 8am! Amazingly she isn't running a mile from
the idea of doing it all over again for 2012!
Local businesses who support the festival in so many ways -
we are grateful to all for their support, and ask that you
in turn will support them by visiting our sponsors page, and
when you visit our wonderful town - whether for our festival
or at any other time of the year.
